Unit Description The unit develops personal direction and enquiry. The student will have considered one or a variety of professional directions within commercial web design, for example corporate identity, advertising, editorial and promotional web design, and structured a project proposal to reflect this. A detailed project proposal, or proposals, and project management plan will be devised, as a means of facilitating the student in taking responsibility for her or his own learning, and as a means of allowing a “staged” plan of study for the duration of the unit. The student will then produce a major project(s) with a clear vision of function and purpose in their chosen direction, in solution to visual and communications problems, demonstrating high levels of professional awareness and sensibility, and creative, innovative and technical abilities relevant to the professional orientation of commercial web design. Syllabus The student will produce an initial proposal for a major project, or portfolio of projects, and present this to staff and the student group. Learning Outcomes The student will be able to: -Appraise existing and developing technologies for producing web based products -Demonstrate the ability to produce comprehensive and well considered project proposal and project management plan for a web design project -Demonstrate an understanding of commercial web design at conceptual, technical and visual levels together. -Analyse and apply relevant commercial and/or marketing considerations -Appraise existing and developing technologies for web site production, and choose appropriate technologies for particular products -Work independently to produce a substantial body of work appropriate commercial web design -Demonstrate the ability to critically appraise the outcome of their work in relationship to their stated intention -Show a critical perception of commercial web design. Teaching and Learning Methods This unit is studio based, with an emphasis on responsive, student-centred experiential learning (including peer group learning). Technical help suitable to the students’ particular requirements will support production activities.
Assessment The learning outcomes will be assessed through Assessment criteria include: quality, coherence and relevance of content; quality of research; selectivity; critical perspective; experimentation and innovation; the appropriateness, visual quality, navigation, structure and "usability" of the work; level of interaction; progress; and the technical learning and effectiveness. Indicative Reading Students will be expected to engage fully in on-line research activities, facilitated through the digital environment that supports Digital and Interactive Television (at www.newmediahull.net). Suitable use of research texts will be determined in the first instance by the students, though with the assistance of tutors conducting this unit. |
